Non-maximality and vagueness: Revisiting the plural Sorites paradox

چکیده
This paper is an attempt at a synthesis of two superficially conflicting approaches to non-maximality: the issue-based approach (Malamud 2012, Križ 2015, & Spector 2021 a.o.), which generates clear-cut truth conditions once issue parameter has been fixed, and strict/tolerant (Burnett 2017 on non-maximal construals involve vagueness. I argue that there are classes contexts license non-maximality. One them gives rise Sorites paradox non-embeddability non-maximality controlled for. The other class does not vagueness all. To model this distinction, introduce formal framework combines with notion strict tolerant (Cobreros, Egré, Ripley van Rooij 2012a), defined via super-/subvaluation over different issues. system provides sources non-maximality, only one involves

Sorites without Vagueness I: Classificatory Sorites
An abstract mathematical theory is presented for a common variety of soritical arguments, treated here in terms of responses of a system, say, a biological organism, a gadget, or a set of normative linguistic rules, to stimuli. Any characteristic of the system’s responses which supervenes on stimuli is called a stimulus effect upon the system. Classificatory sorites is about the identity of or ...
متن کاملSorites without Vagueness Ii: Comparative Sorites
We develop a mathematical theory for comparative sorites, considered in terms of a system mapping pairs of stimuli into a binary response characteristic whose values supervene on stimulus pairs and are interpretable as the complementary relations ‘are the same’ and ‘are not the same’ (overall or in some respect). Comparative sorites is about hypothetical sequences of stimuli in which every two ...
متن کاملVagueness and Plural Predication
This paper addresses the question of how to model the application of vague predicates like tall and bald to plural subjects like John and Mary and the men. In other words, we are interested in developing a logical analysis for natural language sentences like Mary is tall and The men are bald. In the past 30 years, much research has been devoted to finding the proper logical framework to model t...
متن کاملContextual Effects on Vagueness and the Sorites Paradox: A Preliminary Study
Context is a prominent theme in accounts of the semantics of vagueness. Contextual theories of vagueness have been motivated in part by a desire to disarm skeptical arguments that make use of vagueness; another motive is the hope that they might help to resolve the Sorites Paradox. This paper is intended as part of a larger project, which aims at describing and comparing the leading theories th...
متن کاملRough Sets and Sorites Paradox
We discuss the rough set approach to approximation of vague concepts. There are already published several papers on rough sets and vague concepts staring from the seminal papers by Zdzis law Pawlak. However, only a few of them are discussing the relationships of rough sets with the sorites paradox. This paper contains a continuation of discussion on this issue.
